Approximately 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a release.
Officers state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then discovered many other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state preliminary tests suggest the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.
"There is still no lead as to its source; investigators are presently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to solve the case" and have appealed to the residents for tips.
An important representative said the incident rendered him without words and required to be resolved quickly.
"This incident hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on social media, referring to the killing of nine victims by a gunman targeting people of migrant background in February 2020.
