European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official stated the case was “another example” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
