Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
